Alternate Names

Post by patriciaann » Wed Jun 24, 2015 4:41 pm

My great grandfather was listed by one name on his birth certificate, another on his marriage certificate, and yet another on various other forms.
How do I list these alternate names in Heredis?

The subject was discussed briefly on the Heredis 2014 list ("nickname/aka", Jan 21, 2014). Otherwise, you can add a nickname to the display (click customize icon > Customize View on the Personal Data view), or perhaps add a User Field to include the additional names. Or, perhaps you would rather add the name variation as a note to the source document for each event.

Thank you, dmossfritch for your reply. Being new here, I did not know to search the forum's previous versions of Heredis for an answer.
The use of the nickname field might work for some of my family members, but not for all. My great-great grandfather was known by 3 different surnames. And some of my family have both nick names as well as multiple surnames.
I'd like to see alternate name field(s) created in Heredis.
And I'd like to be able to link the various alternate names to sources and media items.

I have not seen that option in a genealogy software since Genbox. Unfortunately, that software stopped development in 2007.

The AKA feature is one I use heavily in Family Tree Maker. The video for the 2015 version really got my interested in Heredis, but with this feature lacking it's really made me stop and think about it. I'll definitely be looking deeper into the application now to make sure it's not missing any other standard features.
Thank you for bringing this up, PatriciaAnn.

The Master Genealogist has a Name-variant tag that is coequal with the first entered name. This is especially important with Anglicized French and German names.

Thanks texan, I'll check it out.

I'm looking at doing a do-over with my tree, so thought it was a good time to compare what's available. I like the look of many Heredis features, but as I find facts and sources (and easily connecting the two) very important I don't think Heredis 2015 will be replacing Family Tree Maker this time around.

Unfortunately, it appears that The Master Genealogist has been discontinued.
