"Living" event incosistent with "Death after" event?

Post by dgarciamagarinos » Fri Dec 27, 2019 7:54 am

I have noticed a strange behaviour with the Consistency report. I don't think this is new in Heredis 2020 but perhaps I am doing something wrong.

I have a person whose date of death is entered as "After 20 December 1865".

Then I add an event "Living" with date 5 January 1870.

After adding the "Living" event, Heredis jumps and says that I have a "Living" event after death. The same happens if I run the Consistency Report.

To my logic, both Events seem to be 100% consistent or am I missing something?

It looks like Heredis does not handle well the "Before XXX" or "After XXX" dates when doing consistency checks, right?

Thanks!

Daniel

My understanding is that "after 20/12/1865" means anytime moment after … and this includes those between 20/12/1865 and 05/01/1870
Right ? 8-)

If you know the person was living on 5 January 1870 then I'd suggest changing the death date to after that.

thanks for your comments and for confirming I am not crazy. :)

Yes, refining the death "after XX" date is a workaround but it bugs me a bit that I have to change consistent data to avoid that it is reported as inconsistent... :D

But surely it is not a work around. It seems that you are entering conflicting information that is just beyond logic. Why would you not want to reflect the latest time you know he was alive (if you are sure of your information).

Dear all,

Thanks all for your comments. I think you are right. I was looking at it from a different angle "It is not totally wrong" but you are right that it is not totally correct to say somebody died "after 1850" if we know that he was alive in 1855.

It is not bug but actually a useful feature to improve the approximate dates.
