How to register a change in the given name and gender?

Post by Gwendoline » Wed Sep 10, 2014 6:31 am

Hello,

One member of the family changed her legal given name and gender over time:
Steve became Ellen
and Male became Female

How to register such an event in Heredis? Can we just change the give name and gender in the data panel or are their better solutions? I believe this person wants to be seen as female in the family tree and a note or event may not be the best choice from a psychology viewpoint.

Thanks
Gwendoline

Hello,

You can of course change the gender of this person, and select "F".
You can also add an event and call it "Sex Change" to indicate the date of this very important event for her.

Thanks Christine for the suggestion. I think I will do it this way unless you have some remarks of course :-)

Person 1 (we use here the preferred give name and gender, not the information known at birth)
------------------------
Given name field: Ellen
Gender: Female

Events:
Birth event: 1/1/1970
Event 1: "Identity at birth", 1/1/1970, "Steve (Male)"
Event 2: "New identity", 2000, "Ellen (Female)"

This will of course work, but will it also work from a genealogy viewpoint?
- People knowing the parents of Ellen will probably search for Steve, but will only find this information when they look further at the events.

Steve got married and got children BEFORE the "Sex Change". So, when people look at the tree, they could possibly wrongly conclude that Ellen and her spouse where lesbian and adopted childs because the gender became Female, but was Male when the childrens were born.

Christine's suggestion to alter the Gender designation from M to F is correct. Given the individual's need for the gender change you would not wish to leave the designation as M.

As for how to record the gender change event, might I suggest to include that information with the legal name change event? The name change event would provide a date and associated location information. You could use the text box to describe the why of the name change with information about the gender change.
