Location naming

Post by scgriff » Sat Jul 28, 2018 6:47 pm

This more of a question - asking for opinion or thoughts.

Location names change through time. Documented records will name one location for that time period. But later, the name is changed, such as County or even Country!

A good example is the United States. Some written records show British Colonial America … later to be come the United States after the Revolutionary War. I have recorded United States (British Colonial America) (prior to 1776) and United States (post-1776).

How would you document this? Would you have it listed both ways? Even for the same city, state? Would you this work the same way for County names?

Thank you!

Have you tried the variants?

As for surname, given names and occupation, you can add variants to a place. From the places index, just double-click on the place you want to add a variant then use the button in the variant area to choose a variant. Don’t forget to choose the main variant by clicking on the button.
