I've been using Heredis for awhile and filled in family etc but I never properly filled in all the items because I simply don't understand it all. I'm still a beginner.
Is there a glossary available somewhere that explains what exactly needs to be filled in in Heredis and what all the terms mean?
For example.
Source has the following options:
Type:
Source Name:
Document:
Repository:
Call Nb:
Medium (Digitizing, Internet, Microfilm, copy, original)
Author:
Email:
Site WEB (URL)
Archive:
The questions here that come to mind are:
- What's the difference between Type and Document?
- What is meant to be filled in at Repository, Call Nb and Archive?
- Which option should I pick for Medium, when for example I found a digital version of an old newspaper article on the internet. Is it digitized, internet or copy? Cause for me all could apply.)
Child Status has the following options:
Legitimate
Natural
Legally recognized
Legitimated
Founding
Adopted
Illegitimate
Stillborn
Unknown
Questions here that comes to mind are:
- What's the difference between Legitimate and Natural
- What's the difference between Legitimate and Legally recognized (depending on what the answer of the question above is)
- What's the difference between Legitimated and Legally recognized (depending on what the answer of the question above is)
- What is founding?
These and more questions arise while I go trough my family tree. I want to document and record everything properly but I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the options.
If someone can point me to a glossary either from Heredis or an online source of information where all these specific questions are explained I would be very grateful (preferably with examples). So far I've not been able to find information at such a specific level.

The terms you identify are standard in genealogy and would be found in any book dealing with genealogy sources / citations. You might consider the following book:
