Ancestry.com & Heredis
Ancestry.com & Heredis
Hi,
I basically want to import a GED file to ancestry.com, advance on it there, and re-export the file back into Heredis.
My only problem is that everytime I do that, I have to rematch every individual and every union.
Has anyone found workarounds for this? Or any method that allows to "sync" and work with both Heredis & Ancestry at the same time?
Thanks,

Re: Ancestry.com & Heredis
I would also like to know how to do this. I add things on Ancestry.com regularly and am trying to figure out how to bring in the new information without having to start all over and/or have a lot of duplicates.
Thanks!
Amy

Re: Ancestry.com & Heredis
The best way is :
1) create a gedcom file from Ancestry
2) open this gedcom file with Heredis. It will be automatically converted in Heredis format.
Recreate the ged every time you modify your genealogy in Ancestry.

Great! Will it automatically filter out the duplicate records?

Not exactly, you will have to recreate every time your Heredis genealogy file from the newst ged file. Take care to erase the previous file and replace it with the newest one just created.

Re: Ancestry.com & Heredis
I use Ancestry and update "MY_Tree" mostly using their iPad app. I then sync the Ancestry online to Family Tree Maker on my MiniMac. I then export the GEDCOM from FTM and import it to "MY_Tree" on Heredis on my MiniMac. Heredis will ask where your media is and you can point it to the Media directory of the tree in FTM. After you first establish "MY_Tree" Heredis, to update it you simply delete it in Heredis and follow the same procedure as before. This provides you with a Heredis backup. Not perfect but it works. Would be much better if Heredis could sync with Ancestry but not sure that will happen. Hope this helps someone.

Re: Ancestry.com & Heredis
Hi George -- thanks, that is actually very useful. I have the same workflow and see how it's possible to get things from Ancestry to Heredis via FTM. Maybe you can answer a related question, as no one else has jumped in.
If I go to the search tab for an individual, I'm shown all the possible data sites I can search, starting with Heredis itself. I can chose Ancestry.com (where I have a full subscription) but if I search on that basis, an external browser opens and takes me to Ancestry.com. I was under the impression that I could search Ancestry from within Heredis and download materials directly into my Heredis tree. Is that not right? There are other data services I subscribe to where I'm hoping for the same thing. Thanks for any insight you may be able to provide.

Have you tried "Find / Search in the online archive" ?stellacilento wrote:I was under the impression that I could search Ancestry from within Heredis and download materials directly into my Heredis tree
